A Local Who Knows Maui Inside Out
Tyler's family brought cable television to Maui. They owned the Honda Motorcycle dealership in Lahaina. His cousin Michael McCartney was a beloved radio DJ on KEAO 91.5. This isn't an island he packed a bag for: it's the only home he's ever known. That's what makes his perspective on Maui living the real deal.

A Maui Local Through and Through
Tyler Coons was raised on Maui, and his family's story is woven into the fabric of the island. His grandparents brought cable television to Maui and ran the Lahaina Honda dealership. He grew up listening to his cousin Michael McCartney on the radio, learning the rhythms of island life from the ground up.
Today, Tyler channels that lifelong connection into sharing everything the island has to offer: the best local restaurants, quiet beach coves where the water is glassy calm, upcountry farm stands bursting with avocados and lilikoi, hidden hiking trails, and the communities that give Maui its soul. His perspective comes from a lifetime on island time, not a guidebook.

Whale Watching on Maui
Every winter, thousands of humpback whales migrate to Maui's warm waters. From November through May, the Auau Channel becomes a natural nursery where mothers and calves rest, play, and put on an unforgettable show. Whether you watch from shore on Kaanapali Beach or take a boat tour out of Lahaina Harbor, whale season is the most magical time of year on Maui.

Ocean Conditions
Live Beach Alerts
Current conditions, advisories, and safety alerts for Maui's beaches. Updated regularly to keep you in the know before you head out.
High Surf Warning
North- and west-facing shores see elevated surf of 8-12 ft through Friday. Strong rip currents likely. Swim at lifeguard-protected beaches only. Avoid Black Rock, Honolua Bay, and Ho'okipa.
Water Quality
All monitored beaches report clean water conditions. No brown water advisories or sewage spills active. Standard caution advised after heavy rain: wait 48 hours before entering the ocean.
Portuguese Man o' War Sighting
Multiple sightings reported along Kamaole and Wailea beaches. These venomous creatures can cause painful stings even when washed up on shore. Avoid touching and alert lifeguards.
Beach Closure: Honolua Bay
Access to Honolua Bay shoreline is temporarily closed for coastal restoration work. The overlook and parking area remain open. Expected reopening next month. Check back for updates.
Strong Trade Winds
Northeast trade winds at 20-30 mph today. Windy conditions create choppy water on north-facing shores and reduced snorkel visibility. Leeward beaches (Wailea, Kamaole) offer sheltered conditions.
Sea Turtle Nesting Season
Honu (green sea turtles) are actively nesting on Maui's beaches. Give nesting turtles and hatchlings at least 30 feet of space. Do not use flash photography or lights near nests. Report nesting activity to NOAA.
